A Comprehensive Holistic Treatment Approach To Mental Illness Will Yield The Best Prognosis
With the wide variety of possible diagnosis for the many different mental health disorders treatment methods and options vary. My treatment approach typically falls into several different categories that I summarize for you. Often a “holistic” approach is in the best interest of the individual to ensure against future relapse. Psychiatry is much more than simply “matching a list of symptoms to a particular medication”. Every person is unique and will respond differently to the available treatments. Often medications will require augmentation and psychotherapy, counseling, cognitive behavior therapy; even arriving at the correct diagnosis can be very challenging. Psycho-endocrinology is the study of the interrelationships between endocrine function and mental states, incorporating the idea that variation in physiological hormonal response to stress is related to psychological variables that determine the specific emotional response to that stress. These lab tests of how the hormones, thyroid, and other glands are functioning are critical to a comprehensive evaluation. At times a patient suffering from an thyroid condition or diabetes, or some other bodily illness may experience the symptoms of anxiety or depression. If this is the case, once they are treated for the underlying medical condition, the psychiatric symptoms will dissipate. This is the importance of a comprehensive evaluation which leads into the holistic team approach if deemed necessary. My practice in Scottsdale focuses on this team or holistic approach; I believe this is offers the best diagnosis and prognosis for the individual and will get them on a path to wellness in the quickest possible way.
